Engineering guide · Metallic gasketsMetallic gaskets explained

Metallic gaskets seal where soft gaskets cannot: high pressure, high temperature and hydrocarbon service. This guide covers the solid metal types (ring joint and flat metal) and the semi-metallic types that combine metal with a soft filler, with materials, hardness limits and how to choose.

What is a metallic gasket?

A metallic gasket is made wholly or mainly of metal. A solid metallic gasket such as a ring joint seals by plastic deformation of the metal against a machined groove. A semi-metallic gasket such as a spiral wound or kammprofile gasket uses metal for strength and springback, plus a soft filler or facing that does the sealing.

Both types are covered by ASME B16.20 for pipe flanges; ring gaskets for wellhead equipment are covered by API 6A.

Types of metallic gaskets

TypeConstructionTypical service
Ring joint, R oval / octagonalSolid metal ring in a machined grooveHigh-pressure piping on RTJ flanges
Ring joint, RXPressure-energised octagonal ringWellhead and high-pressure equipment, API 6A
Ring joint, BXPressure-energised ring for 6BX flangesVery high pressure, API 6A
Flat / corrugated metalPlain or corrugated metal sheetValves and equipment with high bolt load
Spiral wound (semi-metallic)Metal strip wound with graphite, PTFE or ceramicRefinery and process piping, class 150–2500
Kammprofile (semi-metallic)Grooved metal core with soft facingHeat exchangers and problem joints
Double jacketed (semi-metallic)Filler enclosed in a metal jacketHeat exchangers, reactors, manholes

JaySeal makes ring joint gaskets, spiral wound gaskets, kammprofile gaskets and jacketed and corrugated gaskets.

Materials and hardness

A solid metal gasket must be softer than the flange, so the gasket deforms and the flange groove does not. ASME B16.20 limits the hardness of ring gaskets:

Ring materialCodeMax. BrinellMax. Rockwell B
Soft ironD9056
Low carbon steelS12068
4-5 chrome ½ molyF513072
SS 410S41017086
SS 304 / 316 / 347S304 / S316 / S34716083

For semi-metallic gaskets the metal is chosen for the fluid and temperature: SS 304/316L for most service, 321 and 347 for high temperature, Monel for seawater and HF acid, Inconel and Hastelloy for severe service.

When to choose a metallic gasket

  • Flanges are ring-type joint (RTJ): a ring gasket is the only choice.
  • Pressure class 600 and above, or hydrocarbon and hydrogen service.
  • Temperatures beyond what PTFE, rubber or fibre sheet can take.
  • Joints that cycle in temperature and must keep their seal, such as heat exchangers.

FAQ

Questions engineers ask us.

What is a metallic gasket?

A gasket made wholly or mainly of metal, such as a ring joint (RTJ) gasket, or a semi-metallic gasket like a spiral wound or kammprofile gasket that combines metal with a soft filler or facing.

What are the types of metallic gaskets?

Ring joint gaskets (R oval and octagonal, RX, BX), flat and corrugated metal gaskets, and semi-metallic gaskets: spiral wound, kammprofile and double jacketed.

Why must a ring joint gasket be softer than the flange?

So that the ring deforms into the groove and seals, without damaging the flange groove. ASME B16.20 sets maximum hardness values, for example 90 BHN for soft iron and 160 BHN for SS 316.

Is a spiral wound gasket metallic?

It is semi-metallic: a metal strip wound together with a soft filler such as graphite or PTFE, usually with metal inner and outer rings.

Where are metallic gaskets used?

In refineries, petrochemical plants, oil and gas wellheads, power plants and heat exchangers: wherever pressure, temperature or the fluid is too severe for a soft gasket.
